What Is Open Badges?

Open Badges is an open standard, originally developed by Mozilla and now maintained by the IMS Global Learning Consortium, for issuing portable digital credentials that learners own and can share across platforms. An Open Badge is a digital image (typically a PNG) that contains embedded metadata identifying the issuer, the recipient, the criteria the recipient met to earn the badge, and a verification URL that allows third parties to confirm the badge is authentic. The standard makes credentials interoperable: a badge issued by one platform can be displayed in any other platform that supports Open Badges, including LinkedIn, the issuer's own website, the recipient's portfolio, and verifier services like Credly. The format has become the de facto standard for micro-credentials, professional certifications, and skill achievements. Implementing Open Badges in an LMS requires standards-compliant issuance (the badge metadata must conform to the Open Badges specification), revocation support (the issuer must be able to revoke badges that were issued in error or have expired), and integration with verifier services.
